Final Major Project - Creative Making

Creative Making.
During our second week of Final major project we was given a collaborative project "Creative making" in which we had to work with students from lens base media and media production.
The given task was to make something creative with only using a kit of parts which were things that are common to all students, what we then decided to do with all of the objects was down to us, the given objects were the given below:
  • A sock
  • A torch
  • String
  • 2 different buttons
  • A sponge
  • Blutak
  • Rubber bands
  • A book
  • Paper clips
  • A map
  • Masking tape
  • A ball
  • A plastic bottle
  • A box.
We was also given some suggested other resources to use which where the following:
  • Drawing medias
  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Scalpels
  • Rulers
  • Wet medias
  • Inks
  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • Coloured papers
  • Card
  • Layout pads/Sketchbooks
  • Camera
  • Cutting Mat.
Our group included 3 Graphics students and 3 lens base media students.
Our first original idea was to create a survival kit using the objects in the box for all different people of all ages and all different careers, in which the graphics students would come up with a brand name and logo for the kits and crate a small brioche or poster for them and then the lens base media students would create a short adverts for the survival kits.

Our second idea was to construct a monster like sculpture out off all of the objects and materials in the box and to then create our own individual interpretation of it, in which we would then display them all together with the sculpture standing in front of all the individual pieces. The point of this idea was that no one would know what pieces was created by which student.

The group thought that the second idea would be alot more visually interesting and the audience would have to think about it more, so we decided to go with that idea.

so then i had to think about how i wanted to show my own interpretation of this sculpture, i came up with a few ideas;

  • Detailed Drawing.
  • Turning it into a actual monster/Illustration.
  • Create a exhibition poster.
  • Create my own version of the same sculpture using different materials.
  • Create a collection of an image of the sculpture edited in different ways on photo shop.

I decided to go with the small collection of images edited on photoshop.
firstly I had to get some images of our monster-like sculpture from a few different angles and select which image I was going to use to edit.
The images below are the images that were taken of our group's sculpture.

I decided to go with the first image taken because for I thought it would the best image of the sculpture, for you could see the face of the monster and in all the other images it is not very clear what our sculpture is meant to be.
Once I had chosen my image I started to play around on photoshop with the filers and some of the other different settings and here are some of the outcomes.

Here I have added a Reticulation filter to the image which had made the image slightly pixilated and turned the image into black and white making the darker colours slightly darker than a normal black and white filter would, I feel that it gives off a very old film effect to it.

Here I have used the stained glass filter, which makes the image look like it is a piece of painted glass that you would normally see in glass windows in doors or churches.

This images shows the vibrant red filter, which had made all the red shades and tones in the image brighter and vibrant, it had also made all of the other colours in this image slightly green.

Here I have used the wind filter, which has made the outlines of the sculpture look smoother with a slight ripple.

Here I had added a normal black and white filter to the image, which has just made the darker colours in the image black and the light colours in the image white.

In this image I had made it so that the bright colours are lighter and brighter and the darker colours are darker and dull I did this by changing the colour levels and curves in the original image.

Firstly I inverted the image so that everything was in negative, I then added a red and white gradient map over the top because I thought the negative colours really did work with the sculpture.

Here I have added the liquefying filter which has given the image the effect of a piece of dripping water.
I feel that this filter didn't really work very well with the sculpture.

This image had the motion blurred filter added to it, also I have added a red and green gradient map as well as a green filter over the top, I feel that this edit gives the effect of something that you would see in a scary film or a poster for a scary film.

Here I have done the same as the previous edit but just taken off the last green filter, which gives the image a less scary feel.

Here I have added an ocean ripple filter and a gold blue and red gradient map.
The filter makes the image look like it was taken in the reflection of water on which the sculpture was facing.

This is my favourite edit, I have used the poster edge filter.
I think that the image looks very animated and very much like it would be used in a comic.
the colours are also quite vintage, quite dull.

Final Major Project - Chris Ofili

Ofili,C. (2008). No woman no cry . Available: http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/ofili-no-woman-no-cry-t07502. Last accessed 13th April 2014.

Chris Ofili is a British painter known for artwork making reference to aspects of his Nigerian heritage, each piece of his artwork holds a lot of cultural elements and they also show his meaning of beauty.
Ofili mainly uses the colours red, green and black in his artwork which come from the African flag, each different colour has its own meaning red representing blood shared by the people of African decent.
Green representing the land that had be fought over and black representing the colour of the skin of the Africans.

Ofilis' artwork is built up of different layers of materials mainly being paint, glitter and dung, he also uses the elephant's dung which is chemically treated to avoid putrefaction, odour and flies as small stands to hold up each of the canvas pieces when in  display.

Final Major Project - William Morris

Unknown. (2009). William Morris and His Brer Rabbit Wallpaper.Available: http://www.wrensnest.org/william-morris-and-his-brer-rabbit-wallpaper/. Last accessed 12th April 2014.

Form.
This is a very complex design as it has several different creatures featured in it, it is also very highly detailed with a mirrored pattern. Most of the shapes and lines are repeated on the whole design. This is a flat 2D wallpaper design with a smooth thin texture. The colours used in this piece are quite cold colours if this was used to wallpaper a room the room would feel quite cold I feel that this would work best in a bathroom or toilet.

Process.
This piece was made in the mid 1860s by designer William Morris alongside one of his close friends who was also an artist, it was first made by hand using normal drawing and painting techniques then sent to a manufacture to be mass printed to be sold around the world.

Content
The rabbits and the bird would have been created from an observation drawing and the small flowers would have been inspired by an actual flower but look more at the outline, shape and form then all the small details. The purpose of this design piece is for home decoration.
I found it very easy to tell what this design is off but I cannot work out what the meaning behind this pieces is, if there even is one.

Mood.
I would happily have this piece in my home although I think I would have it in a bathroom or toilet rather than a bedroom or the main living areas. I really like how there is very little detail in this piece and it is all produced in block colours.

Final Major Project - Research.

I have located some amazing pattern books in the library and this really inspired me and also made me broaden my ideas. At first I had limited myself to just three cultures but having looked at a variety of pattern books and travel books I am now going to consider many more cultures. I have researched some designers such as William Morris and his wallpaper. I have also done internet research and located some useful images that I will explore further. I have now put many images of patterns into my FMP sketchbook and annotated them.
I found this research hugely inspirational and helpful because I have now looked at more different patterns and cultural patters and seen how different each and everyone is and how different the colour variety changes between them all.

Brodie,Antonia(2010)V&A Patterns, Gardens Florals, London, V&A Publishing

I was hugely inspired by the colours used in these patterns that I found in this V&A floral pattern book, even though it is not a cultural pattern I still think that this is very useful to help me for my final design.
The use of very little colour is very effective and very eye catching, they are quite simple but with huge amount of detail.

Thomas, Abraham(2010) V&A Patterns, Owen Jones, London, V&A publishing.

These patterns definitely fitted better into my theme because they were typical patterns that you would have seen in the Tudor times, the colour used is amazing; it is very bright and eye catching but there is not too much going on, and even though each pattern is different it keeps to the same colour theme and I think that works really well, when looking at all of the patterns together.

Once again these patterns do not fit into my theme very well but they have got some amazing colours used in them and the patterns themselves are beautiful designed some with huge amount of detail and some with very little. I like how it is mainly just block colours used I think that it is very effective.

Buruma, Anna(2010) V&A Patterns, Liberty & Co, London, V&A Publishing.

These patterns are very vintage in the colour use, very old dull colours used but it works very well with the style of the drawing/ illustrations/ patterns. They are all very detailed and are all a floral pattern design, others also include wildlife.

Chang, Yuen(2010) V&A Publishing, Chinese Textiles, London, V&A Publishing.

The traditional Chinese style of illustrations I find really interesting and very beautiful, so finding these patterns was hugely inspiring to use this kind of style for one of my final designs.I also really love the colours used the sometimes use very bright wonderful colours and then sometimes use very plain and boring colours but you get the same effect no matter what they colours are.

I found a huge variety of patterns in the library and this really inspired me to look at more different cultures. Looking at a travel book also inspired me. Putting my patterns in my sketchbook was effective and the annotations help me focus.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the volume of patterns we have in the library at Rave and these book have really inspired me.

I had intended to just look at three cultures, Aztec, Mehendi and African but after seeing just how many cultures have an amazing array of patterns I have now decided to broaden my
research and look at many cultures.

Authors Own

I am still not sure as of yet what cultural patterns I am going to use to create my final designs
I could have gone to the V&A sooner and I should have gone to more exhibitions by now so I will definitely do this in the next few days.
Next I am going to go to the V&A and other exhibitions and I am going to start my research into artists and wallpaper

Final Major Project - Project Proposal.

Pathway

Graphics
Project Title
Cultural wallpaper.

Section 1: Review (Approx 150 words)
Since starting Ravensbourne in September I have developed some strong skills when using computer software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I have learnt how to use After Effects, which was really interesting as I did not know how to use it before and I would really like to use it again at some point. I have also learnt how to use some 3D machinery such as the laser cutter and the 3D printer as well as other basic machines and equipment. By using a weekly blog I have learnt that it is a better and easier way to keep track of my work and it has helped me to evaluate my work better than I would when just using my sketchbooks.
Section 2: Project Concept (approx 250 words)
Coming from an Indian background I have decided that for my final major project I want to look at different types of cultural patterns for example Aztec, African and Mahendi for I find these patterns really fascinating and I really like the whole concept behind each different one. I will also do research into numerous other cultures such as Japanese, Chinese, traditional British patterns, Tudor and Celtic, South East Asia, Maori and Aboriginal. I will then make my own interpretation of these patterns. This being the patterns themselves and the colours used. I am aiming to then make the patterns into several different sheets of wallpaper that I would like to hand print using lino printing. My intention is to produce at least two sheets of wallpaper for each different final pattern design. I am also aiming to produce a small sample book full of different colour schemes for each different print. It may be that I am unable to produce the sheets of wallpaper and the sample book due to printing difficulties or it being too impractical. If this happens I will then instead scan my final pattern designs into the computer and neaten and sharpen them up using Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign and then transfer onto different types of fabric using the fabric printer, which can then be used to make a garment or a type of accessory such as a scarf of a headband.
Section 3: Evaluation (approx 100 words)
By creating an action plan I am able to track my progress to make sure I am using my time efficiently and to make sure I am producing everything on time. I will be using several sketchbooks in which I will keep all of my processes and ideas and anything that changes throughout the seven weeks. My daily blog will include more information and will explain the work more than my sketchbook. I will evaluate each piece of work and talk about it more detail during regular crits with peers and tutors.
