Final Major Project - Research.

I have located some amazing pattern books in the library and this really inspired me and also made me broaden my ideas. At first I had limited myself to just three cultures but having looked at a variety of pattern books and travel books I am now going to consider many more cultures. I have researched some designers such as William Morris and his wallpaper. I have also done internet research and located some useful images that I will explore further. I have now put many images of patterns into my FMP sketchbook and annotated them.
I found this research hugely inspirational and helpful because I have now looked at more different patterns and cultural patters and seen how different each and everyone is and how different the colour variety changes between them all.

Brodie,Antonia(2010)V&A Patterns, Gardens Florals, London, V&A Publishing

I was hugely inspired by the colours used in these patterns that I found in this V&A floral pattern book, even though it is not a cultural pattern I still think that this is very useful to help me for my final design.
The use of very little colour is very effective and very eye catching, they are quite simple but with huge amount of detail.

Thomas, Abraham(2010) V&A Patterns, Owen Jones, London, V&A publishing.

These patterns definitely fitted better into my theme because they were typical patterns that you would have seen in the Tudor times, the colour used is amazing; it is very bright and eye catching but there is not too much going on, and even though each pattern is different it keeps to the same colour theme and I think that works really well, when looking at all of the patterns together.

Once again these patterns do not fit into my theme very well but they have got some amazing colours used in them and the patterns themselves are beautiful designed some with huge amount of detail and some with very little. I like how it is mainly just block colours used I think that it is very effective.

Buruma, Anna(2010) V&A Patterns, Liberty & Co, London, V&A Publishing.

These patterns are very vintage in the colour use, very old dull colours used but it works very well with the style of the drawing/ illustrations/ patterns. They are all very detailed and are all a floral pattern design, others also include wildlife.

Chang, Yuen(2010) V&A Publishing, Chinese Textiles, London, V&A Publishing.

The traditional Chinese style of illustrations I find really interesting and very beautiful, so finding these patterns was hugely inspiring to use this kind of style for one of my final designs.I also really love the colours used the sometimes use very bright wonderful colours and then sometimes use very plain and boring colours but you get the same effect no matter what they colours are.

I found a huge variety of patterns in the library and this really inspired me to look at more different cultures. Looking at a travel book also inspired me. Putting my patterns in my sketchbook was effective and the annotations help me focus.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the volume of patterns we have in the library at Rave and these book have really inspired me.

I had intended to just look at three cultures, Aztec, Mehendi and African but after seeing just how many cultures have an amazing array of patterns I have now decided to broaden my
research and look at many cultures.

Authors Own

I am still not sure as of yet what cultural patterns I am going to use to create my final designs
I could have gone to the V&A sooner and I should have gone to more exhibitions by now so I will definitely do this in the next few days.
Next I am going to go to the V&A and other exhibitions and I am going to start my research into artists and wallpaper
